Just casually dropping by to introduce you to some people

I guess you can have a deleted bit, too… 😀

He eyed us both, weighing something up. “What if I could give you conclusive proof that it wasn’t me,” he said at last.

Carly snorted. “Then I’d say that’s something that should have come up just now during questioning.”

He ran a hand through his curls in frustration. “It’s not something I can afford to have on record.”

“But you’re happy to be a murder suspect instead?” Carly’s eyebrows had inched upwards.

He shrugged. “Some things are worth protecting.”

Carly gave him the evil eye. I counted to twenty, then witnessed something I never thought I’d see: Carly sighed, and broke eye contact. “Fine,” she said, huffy. “Let’s see this proof of yours then.”

He shook his head. “Not you. Her.”

Carly growled. “And what proof are you going to give me that she’s not going to be the next person to show up on a slab with weird markings all over her? Not that there’d be anyone alive to see them, but whatever.”

It was a mark of Carly’s extreme frustration that she’d said that much. Usually you couldn’t extract specific details from her for love or money—or secret breaking.

Wolf man narrowed his eyes. “Weird markings?”

“Not the point.” Carly brushed him off smoothly and effectively, but I could see the question lingering in his eyes. So. Either he hadn’t know about the markings, or he had, but hadn’t expected anyone else to see them. Intriguing. “I want her back alive. How can you guarantee me that?”
