Writer Wednesday: Causes of Writer’s Block

Welcome to Writer Wednesday, one quick tip to improve your writing weekly. Today’s topic is writer’s block!

For me, there are usually three reasons for this.

Number one, I have done something wrong, and in that case, it’s a matter of backing up to the last point in the story where the writing felt easy and basically just rewriting from there.

Number two, it could be that I am actually just flat exhausted. In that case, it means that my creative well is basically sucked empty and I need to go and do a bunch of activities that are going to refill that well until I have enough… water? back in me that it can spill out again as writing. Metaphors, yay 😀 So watching TV, reading good books, and generally just giving my brain lots of good old stare-at-the-wall time.

Number three, it might just be that my brain is resisting it because, you know? What writing takes effort! And some days, my brain just doesn’t want to effort. So for me, that’s just a matter of sitting down at the keyboard, applying fingers to keys, and often closing my eyes and doing a really clear visualisation of the scene before I write it.

So that’s it: my top three reasons for writer’s block! Let me know in the comments which one hits you most!

This post is mostly transcribed from this week’s Writer Wednesday reel on my Instagram feed. Join me there in Stories for daily encouragement and BTS 🙂
